Summary Of Advice
A quick summary of advice of what to think about for a house extension.
Plans
Take your time with your house plans. If you are like me and this is your first house extension think this through and leverage other people's opinions don't think you know best. It can be time consuming but this is the time to make mistakes and adjust them.
On-site
My builder wanted to make sure everything is built to building regulations so when it comes to materials or positioning these things are not top of mind so make sure you are available or onsite to help steer the conversation so you end up with what you want.
Time
Builders and tradies always appeared time poor in a rush to get the work done and move onto the next job. Time is money for them you need to be prepared and know options ahead of time so when questioned on the spot to make a decision you can. Therefore it's vital you know their building schedule and timeframes so you are on the same page with your builder. Don't forget tradesmen are not all that consultative you need to push and ask the questions.
Knowledge
Most stressful part is always feeling they are trying to find the quickest and easiest route for them as opposed what will be more long lasting and achieve the best results. Furthermore, given my lack of experience, is what I am asking actually the best result or are the tradesmen just pulling the wool over my eyes. If possible cross reference their advice with other people who are not tied to the build to make sure they are not trying to send you down a garden path.
Resource
I had searched the internet looking for a website/resource such as this to gain some further insights and leverage their learnings to apply to my house extension. But all I found what companies plugging their own services or insanely lavish builds just showing off their new house. Ultimately this is why I created this website so please use this as one of the resources you have to hand to help you with new your house extension.
The hope is that website has helped you make an more informed decision with your house extension and better manage some of the challenges along the way.
